广西“悬崖书店”:在 326 米天坑中邂逅自然与书香

A special bookstore built on the cliff of a deep sinkhole (落水洞) in Hechi, Guangxi, has become very popular. The sinkhole is 326 meters deep, and the bookstore’s amazing location and unusual reading experience attract many people.

Opened in May 2025 in Mianhua Tiankeng Scenic Area, the bookstore is now a famous landmark. At night, lights shine on more than 10,000 books along the cliff, making a beautiful “knowledge canyon”. Visitors need to walk down over 1,000 wooden steps to get there.

Building the bookstore was not easy. Because of the steep karst (喀斯特地形) land, workers used special technology to make it safe. The founder of the scenic area, He Zhijian, said he got the idea from a famous bookstore in Japan and its branch in Hangzhou. What’s more, the sinkhole actually helps protect the bookstore. “No matter how hard the rain falls, the inside of the store stays dry,” He said. The overhanging (悬伸的) rock acts like a big umbrella. The company’s manager also said the goal was to let people enjoy reading in nature, not just to sell books.

The project has brought positive changes to the local village. Before 2019, Mianhua village was poor and had little water. After building the scenic area, roads and facilities improved. Now, many villagers have returned to open homestays and restaurants. The area also has a cliff pool, a hotel, and a cafe. So far, it has welcomed more than 100,000 visitors. Many people also come here to take photos and share them online.
