A teenager who raised thousands for charity has died in hospital after surgery. Emma Welch, aged 14, from Chilcompton, died in the early hours of Thursday after undergoing an operation to correct her spinal curvature(弯曲).
Just four days before going into hospital Emma set a new, as yet unofficial, world record for the largest number of teddies gathered on a mountain top. She came up with the idea of climbing Snowdon with a team of volunteers carrying 135 soft toys. That was one of a number which Emma came up with to raise money for the national charity Brain Tumour Research. She was inspired by Andrew Stammers, her minister at the Baptist Church in Radstock, who has a brain tumour.
Emma was just 12 years old and a pupil at Norton Hill School in Midsomer Norton when she decided she wanted to complete her Everest challenge. She said at the time: "I decided that this was my chance to prove that just because I have a curved spine it does not mean I can’t change things. So I am going to climb Mount Everest." Emma’s endeavours were recognised earlier this year when she received the Achiever in Sport with a learning/physical disability award as part of the Bath & North East Somerset’s Chairman’s Sports Awards for 2015.
Mr Stammers is in close contact with Emma’s parents. He said Emma’s parents have requested that anyone who wants to express their sympathies do so by making a donation on Emma’s JustGiving page rather than sending flowers.
Sue Farrington Smith, chief executive at Brain Tumour Research, said: “Emma’s loss is so tragic and unexpected. She was an amazing young woman. Her passion and determination was exceptional. Our hearts and deepest sympathies are with Tony and Lesley in the pain of losing their child. We will continue to help Emma’s parents to build a lasting legacy for their much-loved daughter."
