Can you write the Chinese characters(汉字) “ganga” ? Do you know how to write “tiaozhou”? If you can’t, you’re not alone. Nowadays, most people are typing(打字) into computers instead of writing on paper. We type Chinese characters mainly according to their pronunciation. The result is to know Chinese words without remembering how to write them. In 2013, China Youth Daily(《中国青年报》) did a study of 2,517 people. 98% of them said they had once forgotten how to write a common Chinese word.
Teenagers are better than adults at writing Chinese words because they spend more time learning and practicing at school. However, He Yu, head of a research team for Chinese teaching at a high school in Beijing, said, “Many students are using electronic dictionaries and computers to help with their studies. Using these tools too often will make students too lazy to think and write.” Such worries have brought about a popular TV show called Chinese Spelling Hero(中国汉字英雄).
Interestingly, handwriting teachers can also forget Chinese words. Shen Bin is a handwriting teacher at a school in Beijing. She said that it’s common for teachers like her to forget certain words. “The handwriting class is also a good chance for me to remember how to write,” she said.
