Toshiba(东芝公司)created a very realistic looking robot named Junko Chihira to work in a new travelling information center in Japan. The robot can speak Japanese, Chinese and English, and made her first show a few weeks ago in Aqua City Odaiba, a shopping center in Tokyo. Junko Chihira is greeting visitors as they walk in, but in December, the robot will be able to tell tourists information about the area.
Junko Chihira is the successor to another Toshiba robot named Aiko Chihira, who served as a greeter in a store in Japan in April. Aiko Chihira was created by Hiroshi Ishiguro, a robotics(机器人学)researcher at Osaka University in Suita, Japan. Like Aiko Chihira, Junko Chihira can so far only answer with pre-set speech. But Junko Chihira will be upgraded(升级)by 2017 so that it can answer tourists’ questions. And Junko Chihira can speak one more language than Aiko Chihira — Chinese, according to the Japan Times. Not only was Junko Chihira created to look like a human, but was made more realistic. The robot stands at 5 feet and 5 inches, and is 26 with a June 1 birthday.
Toshiba plans on making more robots for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to help tourists. Japan has been increasingly turning to robotics for the Olympics. A robot is also be used as the lead in a new Japanese movie.
