Many universities across China will give more scholarships(奖学金)to students after tuition fees were raised. According to the Jiangsu province education department, tuition fees for some university majors, including medicine, engineering, and liberal arts will increase by around 17.2 percent, from about 4,600 yuan a year to 5,500 yuan ($747 to $891) a year.
In Ningxia, tuition fees for many majors such as science, engineering and agriculture will be increased by more than 50 percent, and some others will almost double. Some universities in Guizhou, Zhejiang, and Shandong provinces have also raised fees. It says that the universities will use the extra money to give awards to the teachers, build new labs and buy new equipment(设备).
Ning Mei, a student from a university of Guangdong recently said she has to pay more than 80,000 yuan in three years to finish higher education, which just one year ago would have been free. "Many students, especially those from poor families, will be under great financial pressure to pay for the universities," said Ning. "Though some people in China are rich, we have to realize that many families from rural areas earn less than 10,000 yuan a year."
At the same time, some universities will offer more scholarships to under graduate and graduate students.
