In many cities across the United States, May 20 was Bike to Work Day. The Day encourages people to try bicycling to work instead of driving or taking a bus or train.
Biking has not always been a popular kind of transportation(交通) in the United States. But, in some cities, using a bike to work is becoming normal. The League of American Bicyclists’ website(网站) says that, from 2007 to 2020, the number of people who often biked to work in the US grew by 62 percent. The League of American Bicyclists made National Bike Month in 1956. It wanted to make biking more enjoyable and popular in America.
It is reported that last year around one million people used a bike to get to work or school. But not everyone is interested in becoming a bike rider. Studies often talk about the dangers of biking, especially in large cities with many cars. A 2014 study found that people were two times as likely to die on a bike than in a car.
Biking, of course, does have many benefits. It is good for your health. Research says that three hours of biking a week can reduce(降低) a person’s risk of heart disease(疾病) by 50 percent. Biking is also very friendly to the environment. And it is cheaper than other ways of transportation.
