A mother of five now wants her foot amputated after being bitten by a spider while watching over her son in hospital. Gemma Hunter now walks with a crutch(腋杖) because she cannot bear the pain of putting any pressure on the foot. The bite became infected and has left a 3cm hole in her foot, which has now turned black.
Mrs Hunter has now lost her job. With no resolution in sight, Mrs Hunter is now considering having what her children call her foot removed. “It has been eight months, I just want my life back,” she said.
Mrs Hunter had been by her sick son's bedside in the Royal Blackburn Hospital for around a week when she was bitten in September. Her son had suffered from severe chest pains, and she was keeping a bedside watch. Her foot swelled up days after the bite, which left a 3cm hole in her foot that became infected.
She said, “I was just lying at the side of him with my foot up on the chair. I opened the window of his room to let some air in. His face was red with fever. Then I fell asleep. I woke up at 3:45 am. I had seen the spider before but didn't think anything of it, and saw it on the top of my foot. It looked like a garden spider and its two front legs were longer than the rest. I just lightly shook my foot and it didn't come off, so I reached to brush it off with my left hand, which is when doctors think it bit me because I probably annoyed it——it bit me twice.”
