This past Sunday, Christian music artist Nathan Johnson put his wife Megan to rest after she died just eight hours following the birth of their little girl. Around 2:40 a.m. on Tuesday, June 27, the 31-year-old first-time mom gave birth to Eilee Kate in what appeared to be a smooth delivery. Johnson posted to Instagram, celebrating the arrival of their daughter: "Happy Birthday,Eilee Kate Johnson. Megan feels great. Her heart worked perfectly the whole time and Eilee introduced herself quickly and smoothly. I am a rich man!!!" "They couldn't sleep, so they spent time with the baby and talked all morning," said Josh Wilson, their longtime friend and band mate. Megan was able to hold and feed her baby at least once. Then, after about six hours, she started having trouble. By 11 a.m. she tragically passed away.
In 2002, Megan was diagnosed with heart disease caused by a virus. A then-15-year-old student athlete at North Country Christian School in Missouri, she gave up sports. Years later, she was diagnosed with heart failure. That year, at just 23, Megan underwent a heart transplant. She made a miraculous recovery and married Nathan, a guitarist in the Christian rock band Meaning Machine, the following year. They then moved to Nashville where she delivered her baby girl last Tuesday.
The American Heart Association warns that any pregnancy where a woman has had a heart transplant is in risk of complications. The AHA also notes that there is a greater chance of rejection post child-birth.
Megan, now, can live on — not just in memory. After her own transplant, she became a donor and has spoken openly about it in the past, describing organ donation as "the gift of life". Megan's organs will save over 50 lives.
