The corridors have fallen silent at a school after old fashioned rules were brought back to change bad behaviour. Pupils at the Albany School have been banned from speaking between lessons. The playground also falls silent as children line up on the playground to head to class.
In 2015 the school was graded as “requiring improvements”. Months later, Val Masson became headteacher. In June this year, her new rules came into force. The headteacher decided to use stricter methods of teaching and said that after introducing her silent rules, the number of pupils having poor behaviour halved in just a month.
Mrs Masson, 51, said, “Students have three minutes to queue. When the second bell goes, they're expected to fall silent. Then teachers, including myself, will encourage them to learn lessons by heart.”
However, not everyone is happy with the changes. A parent who asked not to be named said she is not impressed with the rule changes, while insisting the school is still failing to deal with bad behaviour. She said, “Parents are not happy, so I’m not sure what to do. Nobody told us about the changes. I think they should help kids learn more, so I don’t want to send my son back there.”
And fellow pupil Olivia Hazell, said, “I think it's really good to be honest. When you walk to lessons, you can remain focused on your work because you're already in the calm mind.” “Encouraging pupils to keep silent benefits,” said Dr Helen Lees, the author of Silence in Schools. She said,“It's a great experiment and it sounds amazing. It's part of the school environment and in general, they are happy to take part in it. Schools use a range of techniques to encourage orderly behaviour and create a climate for learning.”
