Companies in China are now giving discounts to customers with Huawei mobile phones to support the tech giant’s arrested finance chief Meng Wanzhou.
Restaurants, supermarkets and tourist attractions across the country have announced they will offer a variety of benefits to visitors who have a Huawei phone with them, according to videos and images posted on popular short video app Douyin.
“Anyone with a Huawei cell phone will have 50 yuan taken off their final bill plus discount. Anyone who destroys their Apple phone in public gets a free pair of spectacles priced at 999 yuan!” A big red banner over the entrance of an eyewear store in Xinxiang city, Henan province read.
A noodle shop in Xi’an city, Shaanxi province is seen offering free meals to all Huawei employees. Another restaurant says it will give customers a 20 per cent discount if they show their Huawei phones, while a Shenzhen-based chain fruit shop is also offering customers 12 per cent off everything.
The Shennong Mountain Scenic Park in Henan province said they will waive the 80-yuan entrance fee for tourists with a Huawei phone. From Dec. 16 to Dec. 29, visitors who show their Huawei or Honor phones at the door and follow the park’s social media account can get in for free. The White Cloud Cave of Mount Kong, a scenic spot famous for its crystal formations in a series of cave chambers in Xingtai city, Hebei province, said in an official notice that visitors with a Huawei or Honor phone can gain free entry from Dec. 18 to Dec. 23.
One of Huawei’s suppliers, Shenzhen-based LCD display maker Menpad, said it will punish any employee that buys the popular American smartphone with a fine of 100 per cent of the market price in the next three years. Conversely, it will reward staff who buy Huawei phones.
