The number of death in a chemical plant explosion in China has risen to 78 at present. Of the 28 missing persons reported last time, 25 were confirmed dead and 3 were safe and contacted. Last Thursday’s explosion in the eastern city of Yancheng injured hundreds and flattened an industrial park, which was one of the country’s worst industrial accidents in recent years.
The explosion damaged several buildings in the industrial park and caused a huge fire that lasted all the night. Hundreds of rescuers were sent to the scene, and about 4,000 people have been evacuated from the blast site. Rescuers searched and rescued 20 enterprises within 2 square kilometers around the accident. It’s reported that rescuers found a survivor around 40 hours after the blast. The local fire brigade pulled a man in his fifties from the rubble of the destroyed plant around dawn on March 23, according to a statement on the city government’s official Weibo account. He was taken to hospital for treatment immediately, the statement said.
More than 600 people have received medical treatment following the blast, according to the city government. Among them, 34 are critically injured and 60 are seriously injured, according to CCTV. “The identities of the dead are being confirmed through interviews with family members, home visits and DNA tests,” Yancheng mayor Cao Lubao told CCTV. “The centralized search and rescue work at the accident site has basically ended and the site cleaning work has begun,” Cao added.
Local authorities investigating the cause of the accident said a number of people were taken into police office last Friday. The facility involved in the explosion belonged to Tianjiayi Chemical, a firm that mainly produces raw chemical materials including anisole, a highly flammable compound. In 2015 and 2017, the firm was fined for violating rules on solid and water waste management.
