Two young children ordered £500 of toys using Amazon Alexa and their mum had no idea until the packages arrived on her doorstep. Veronica Estell was stunned when a delivery driver dropped off boxes of PJ Masks toys, Barbie dolls and LOL Surprise figurines and a pack of 48 batteries. At first she thought they were gifts from a mysterious but generous sender. But she soon realized that her six-year-old daughter Aryssa and four-year-old son Cam had used the Alexa virtual assistant, which is linked to her credit card.
Veronica said, “UPS showed up with boxes of gifts and all it had on the shipping tag were my name. I thought who sent all these great gifts! At that moment, I got another knock on the door from UPS so I asked who sent this stuff. But he didn’t know! Then I came back in and heard my daughter said to Cam that packages we ordered from Alexa came!”
She later wrote an update, saying she notified Amazon. She wrote, "I called Amazon and they stopped the other order and gave me a refund for the items, but they didn’t ask for products to be returned." An Amazon spokeswoman said, "We’re currently in touch with this customer. Orders customers place with Alexa for physical products are eligible for free returns."
