More and more people all over the world are learning English now. The world's understanding of English seems to be getting better, according to an education report about English learning. The report ranks English language levels in 63 countries into five classes. They are: "very high level, high, moderate, low and very low."
The report says Denmark is the top country for English as a foreign language. Poland and Austria have joined Denmark and other northern European countries with the "very high levels ". Malaysia and Singapore are the best in Asia with "high levels " in English. Joining them is Argentina, the only Latin American country to belong to "high level." English levels in the rest of Latin America are still low.
In Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, they still pay too much attention to grammar and vocabulary, but not so much to the speaking skills. These countries have spent a lot of time and money on English education. But they have not improved in English since 2007. English language level has actually fallen in many countries in the Middle East and North Africa, partly because of wars in the area.
The report says that 1.75 billion people are speaking English today. They think that the number can grow to two billion by 2020 -- about one-fourth of the world's population.
