Tony Hudgell set his modest aim at the start of his efforts to walk 10 kilometres on his prosthetic(假体的) legs and walking sticks to help the Evelina London Children's Hospital in Lambeth. He spent three months under their care after suffering injuries. His injuries were so serious that he finally had to have both legs amputated(截肢) at the knee, which made him lose his legs forever.
During the coronavirus(冠状病毒) lockdown, Tony has been learning to walk on his new prosthetics by setting his fundraising challenge to walk every day in June. He was inspired when he saw 100-year-old Captain Sir Tom Moore raise money for the NHS by walking laps of his garden.
His adoptive parents Paula and Mark Hudgell wanted to thank the hospital for saving the little boy's life, and hoped family and friends would help them reach their aim of £500. But the boy's amazing efforts have caught hearts and donations worldwide. Tony's JustGiving total now stands at £725,000 and with nine days of walking still to go.
His mum Paula, 52, said, "We can never thank the Evelina enough for what they did for Tony, and will continue to do until he is 18. Everyone there is like family to us and we are just so honoured to give so much back. We wanted to raise something to go towards the care of other children but this is just exciting. It will make such a difference to the hospital that saved Tony's life."
