Tian Xiangyang, 34, is from Shaanxi province. Recently, his videos have become popular on the Internet. He dressed up as “Tang Monk” at Chengdu Happy Valley. “Tang Monk” is a most important character of the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West.
In these videos, he interacts (互动) with visitors in the costume (戏服) of Tang Monk. In one scene, a tourist puts her hands on Tang Monk’s shoulders. Tian first looks shocked, then raises his hand to reject her, covers his face in avoidance (回避), and finally leaves, copying what Tang Monk does in the TV series.
Many people thought Tian looked like Tang Monk. Some comments (评论) include “the expression, the movements look no different even without the costume” and “70 percent resemblance (相似) in appearance, 100 percent resemblance in his character.”
Tian began copying Tang Monk three years ago after his friends said he looked like the character in the TV series. Tian was surprised by his sudden popularity, so he made his performance in Chengdu last longer. He planned to perform in Chengdu for one day. But finally he stayed there for two more days.
Tian said he felt sad when leaving Chengdu, as days of performance made him feel that Chengdu is a comfortable city and it allows all kinds of people to belong to it. He hopes to return to Chengdu more often in the future.
