Norman Ruff lives in a house near Port Carling in Muskoka. The 80-year-old said he had seen signs of bears before but never actually saw one. That was until a male black bear came through his kitchen window in the middle of the night. The noise woke up Norman and his wife, Lois. “As soon as it saw me, I knew we would have a good fight,” Norman said.
When the bear stood on its back legs, its head nearly touched the living room ceiling. During the 20-minute fight, Norman hit the bear several times in the nose while receiving a few strong hits in return.
“It gave me some good slaps(拍打). It was moving its arms around,” he said. Norman also experienced bad damage to his thumb(拇指), when the bear took his hand in its mouth and pulled hard. “Oh, there was lots of blood.”
Luckily, he managed to open the front door during the fight and the bear finally found its way out. He was taken to the hospital in Bracebridge where he became famous for fighting a bear with his fists(拳头).
On Tuesday, police commander Burton along with Houliston presented Norman with a Citation for Bravery(英勇奖章).
