When Jiang Mengnan received the award of Person Touching China for 2021, she said she most wanted to express her thanks to her parents.
Born in 1992, Jiang’s world has been silent since she was 6 months old. She couldn’t hear anything, which also made it hard for her to start speaking. So when she was a child, her parents began teaching her to read lips(嘴唇). They also taught her vocalization(发声) by putting her hands on their throats. It was a slow, hard process, but her parents never gave up and Jiang learned to speak finally.
Jiang has overcome a lot of difficulties to achieve her dream of studying for a PhD(博士学位) at Tsinghua University. When she was old enough, Jiang studied in a standard primary school, not a special school. She said it was tough at first. During lessons, teachers would often write on the blackboard with their back to the students, so Jiang missed much of the content(内容). She had to copy down everything on the blackboard and study alone after class to keep up with her classmates. In 2011, she achieved a good score on gaokao and studied in Jilin University. In 2018, she was accepted as a PhD at Tsinghua University’s School of Life Sciences.
“I always thank my parents, teachers and friends for the respect(尊重) they give me. They never give me special attention for my imperfection, which means I’ve never seen myself as different from anyone else,” she said.
In the future, she wants to continue scientific research and play a part in solving problems of life and health.
