A large area of a country or of a world where people aged 60 or above account for(数量或比例上占) between 20 percent and 30 percent of the population is considered being into a moderately aging society(中度老龄化社会), according to UN standards.
Beijing is accelerating into an “aged society”, due to its huge population base and increased rate(比率) of the city’s aging population.
At the end of 2021, Beijing had more than 4.41 million residents(居民) aged 60 or older, accounting for 20.2 percent of its permanent residents. The number shows that Beijing has been into the stage of a moderately aging society, a senior official of the municipal government said at the 2022 China International Fair for Trade in Services. Beijing had more than 3.11 million residents aged 65 or older at the end of last year, accounting for 14.24 percent of its permanent residents, according to a report. At the same time, the population aged 60 and above who are registered in the city of Beijing was 3.88 million, or 27.5 percent of the registered population in the city of Beijing. Usually, many permanent residents in big cities such as Beijing and Shanghai are not registered in those cities for certain reasons.
“It’s expected that Beijing will be a severely(严重地) aging society by 2035. It’s a fact, as well as a challenge we are facing now,” said an official with the Beijing Health Commission and deputy director of the city’s aging affairs office.
