The FIFA World Cup 2022, which kicked off on Sunday, has attracted more than 1 million soccer fans to Qatar from across the globe. They went for their favorite stars and teams, sharing their love for the world’s most popular sport.
Enner Valencia scored two first-half goals as Ecuador beat hosts Qatar 2-0 in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup on Sunday. The result marked the first time that a host team has lost the opening game of the World Cup.
The FIFA World Cup 2022 will follow along the lines of recent editions, with a 32-team group stage to whittle the field down to 16 teams. Those 16 group-stage teams will advance to the single-game knockout stages — Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, final — where the winner moves on and the loser goes home. There must be a winner on the day for every knockout-round match, and extra time and penalty kicks(罚点球) will be used, if necessary, to determine the victor. Every time zone in the world will get a chance to watch matches at decent times throughout their day.
Even without a home team to cheer for, Chinese fans and enterprises remain enthusiastic about the Qatar World Cup. Support from China has also come in a more concrete way, with most of the tournament’s stadiums, its official transportation system and its accommodation facilities featuring contributions from Chinese builders and providers. The 80,000-seat Lusail Stadium, which is scheduled to host the eye-catching final game, was designed and built by China Railway International Group with advanced energy-saving technologies and sustainable materials. China made vehicles provide shuttle(班车) service to venues of the World Cup. More than 1,500 buses from China’s leading bus maker Yutong are travel regularly on the streets of Qatar. Some 888 are electric. “Made in Yiwu” has accounted for nearly 70 percent of the market share of World Cup merchandise(商品), from flags for the Qatar World Cup round of 32 to ornaments(装饰品) and throw pillows.
