A neonatal intensive care unit(新生儿重症监护室) is a place in the hospital. Very young babies are there. These babies are in danger of dying. The workers must look after them all the time. Parents stay with the children, too. But they cannot be there all the time. They feel bad about that.
Workers at a medical center get an idea. They start a volunteer cuddler program(志愿者拥抱计划). This program started 35 years ago.
People in this program get special training(训练). They learn how to cuddle babies. They learn how to make babies feel good. Many of the volunteers are parents. Volunteers cuddle the babies. They sing and talk to them. Studies show that these babies feel better. They become healthier. Their parents feel better, too.
