Sipho is a 10-month-old dog. He is helping young people with eating disorders (饮食失调). Sipho goes with his owner, Bronwyne Stott, to The Brambles. Ms Stott works for The Brambles. She said, “He just knows who is feeling nervous or weak. And he will sit with his chin on their foot.” She said when he welcomes people at the door, “they feel more relaxed right away”.
The children and young people enjoy taking Sipho for a walk around the garden. That makes them more open about how they are feeling. “He makes them laugh and gets them talking. They can sit and stroke (抚摸) him. ” Ms Stott said. Workers also take Sipho for a walk in their breaks to help with their own health.
A parent, whose daughter has an eating disorder, said, “It was a chance for her to have her opinions heard. Although she is often nervous in these situations, she did feel relaxed within the group.”
Sipho, the first dog to be used at The Brambles, would be fully trained in another eight months. “Dogs are therapeutic anyway, and it’s amazing to have Sipho here,” Ms Stott added. “If you have an eating disorder, he is to help give them the confidence to take the next steps towards recovery (康复).”
