A college student was put into prison for ten years and six months on Wednesday in Zhengzhou. He caught and sold 12 endangered birds during his summer holiday.
Yan, born in 1994, is a college student in Zhengzhou, capital of Henan Province. He caught 12 Eurasian hobbies(燕隼) on July 14 last year with a friend Wang. One of the birds died while another flew away. The rest ten were sold on the Internet for more than 1,000 yuan (about 156.3 dollars). They two caught two more Eurasian hobbies on July 27, as well as two other falcons, before they were arrested by police in Huixian. Yan also illegally bought a crested goshawk. Crested goshawks and Eurasian hobbies are both Class-B protected animals in China.
Yan was fined 5,000 yuan for illegally catching endangered wild animals and another 5,000 yuan for selling such animals, and he was put into prison for ten and a half years. They fined Wang 5,000 yuan and ten years of prison.
