
Research from Oxford University says eating an apple every day can protect your body from a heart attack(心脏病). Researchers say if people over 50 years old in England eat an apple every day, 8,500 fewer people will die each year from heart attacks and strokes(中风). They also say that if all adults eat more fruit and vegetables every day, there will be 11,000 fewer deaths in England. The researchers explain how healthier eating can have big effects(影响) on people’s health.
The saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” entered the English language over 100 years ago. People in the 19th century knew about the advantages of apples. Scientists in the 21st century are still telling us. There’s something good in apples. It can lower cholesterol(降低胆固醇) in our body. Too much cholesterol makes the risk of having a heart attack higher.
Scientists say there are more than 7,500 different kinds of apples. China grows nearly(几乎) half of the world’s apples. The USA is the second largest apple grower, with around 6% of the world’s production. Turkey and India also grow a lot of apples. People eat apples in many different ways. They like eating them raw, baking them, and stewing(炖) them. And they also make sauces(酱) and cakes with them.
