Hato — the strongest typhoon, hit Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao on Wednesday, causing 17 deaths and lots of damage.
The Macao government will offer a total of 1.35 billion MOP ($167 million) to help those who were affected by the disaster. Typhoon Hato left eight people dead on Thursday and over 150 injured, and power and water failure. In Hong Kong, the airport operated overnight to ease air traffic. On Wednesday, 480 flights to and from Hong Kong were cancelled(取消). The leader in Hong Kong's Airport said that it would have to handle more than 1,200 flights on Thursday alone.
However, there were touching moments in some areas struck by Hato. Ten military divers saved on Wednesday three people trapped in underground garages in Zhuhai, the People's Liberation Army Daily reported. Food deliverer Yuan Zuzhuo and two of his friends helped clear fallen trees on the roads, as soldiers, police officers cleaned up roads blocked by fallen trees. Twelve SWAT police officers brought back more than 80 people who were unable to move in fierce winds or unable to get out from the bus on Wednesday morning. Mr Yuan , a store owner in Jida, Zhuhai, gave 20,000 steamed buns for free to local people before dinnertime on Wednesday. "We found most supermarkets, stores and markets were closed. There was no power or water supply. We thought that many people would not have enough food. They don't cost much but can fill the stomach," he said.
