Don't try to be happy because it will only make you sad. Trying to keep a smile on your face will make your depression worse if you are sad, a new study suggests. Feeling content has become the goal for many people in recent years, but it may be more beneficial if you can embrace your sadness.
University of Melbourne researchers said that social avoidance for sadness could be harmful for sufferers of the blues(忧郁患者). Dr Brock Bastian, a psychologist behind the study, said,“Depression rates are higher in countries that have a higher happiness.”Feeling happy is more and more important for us, and it has become a goal in itself. This reinforces(加强) the message that we should aim to maximize(最大化) our positive emotions and avoid our negative emotions. Society needs to change its attitude to depression if the disorder is to be dealt with effectively, Dr Bastian implied. He added that people are used to celebrating their success by media rather than showing their sadness.
For the study published in the journal Depression and Anxiety, the researchers evaluated 112 depressed patients. Each volunteer was asked to rate(评估) their symptoms(症状) of the blues and how much pressure they faced to be happy. They were inquired over a period of one month.
