Davina McNaney on Friday will begin a journey that will bring her home to New York. A cancer survivor, McNaney, 42, will run 466.5 miles from Michigan to New York in the next few weeks in an effort to raise funds and awareness for cancer research. "I'm just a regular person, a stay-at-home mom," she said. "I just want to do something to help others and set a strong example for my girls." The mother of two chose to run her own personal ultra-marathon to show others how grateful she was to come through her illness. "I woke up and felt like I had to do this," McNaney said. "It was a way I could give back."
McNaney has raised more than $10,000 for the Cancer Research Foundation, nearly doubling her initial $5,000 goal. During her first week, McNaney plans to run 36 miles a day. Two 13-mile days will follow so she can celebrate her eldest daughter's eighth birthday and attend her nephew's high school graduation.
On July 3, the final day of her journey, McNaney will run 22 miles across Wayne County to Sodus Point, where her daughters, Sasha, 7, and Nadja, 4, and more than a hundred friends and family will be waiting. Steve McNaney, 35, will serve as her pit crew. It will be his job to keep McNaney fed, hydrated, to track her weight and address any medical issues that arise. At times, McNaney said she will run with others — friends in Michigan, a cousin in Ohio and many friends and relatives in the final few miles in New York.
Company will be nice, she said, noting that she's also looking forward to alone time when she can relax, run and "just let my mind wander." "I hope I can encourage people to challenge themselves, to know that they can overcome difficulties," McNaney said. "I'm stepping out of my comfort zone and putting myself out there to reach my goal. Don't focus on the negative. Celebrate what you do have, celebrate your strength."
