“The seeds I planted will grow into tall trees. I know they will one day,” said Li Yuqing. Graduated from a top university in America, Li could have found a very good job. However, she didn’t. Instead, Li came back to China and became a volunteer teacher. She started teaching English at an elementary school in rural Gansu.
At first, the city girl found life at the school difficult. The toilet was dirty, and she could take showers only once a week. Teaching was difficult, too. When Li was teaching the English word “sandwich”, her students all looked puzzled. They had never seen a sandwich. Although there were so many difficulties, Li didn’t give up. To help her students learn the word “sandwich”, she made a sandwich in class. She encouraged the children to write English letters to her friends in America.
