During the Cold Dew period, sunshine does not reach deep water thoroughly because of falling temperatures. So it’s time when fish swim to shallow water areas where the water temperature is relatively high. That makes it a perfect time to fish. 
It’s also a great time for hiking. During Cold Dew, in the north of China, people enjoy a look of late autumn — white clouds, red leaves and early frost. On the day of the Double Ninth Festival, people often climb hills to enjoy the beautiful scenery. 
During Cold Dew, many regions in China have the custom of drinking chrysanthemum wine. It’s to prevent autumn dryness. The tradition is of Double Ninth Festival, which often falls around Cold Dew. Chrysanthemum is a symbol flower of Cold Dew. According to ancient records, drinking this wine can help maintain people’s youth.
In western Hunan province, people of the Dong ethnic group make kippers (烟熏鱼) during Cold Dew. It’s said that making kippers on the day of Cold Dew can make them especially delicious. In southern Hunan province, a famous area for producing tea seed oil, people pick the seeds until the Cold Dew comes around. 
There are also some other customs, such as eating pomegranates and hawthorns. They are both ripe during Cold Dew. People love pomegranates for their flavor, color, and health benefits. As for hawthorns, they have long been used in herbal medicine. They are thought to boost heart health and stimulate blood flow.
