Huang Qingsui is from the Zhuang ethnic group in Guangxi. He is working to revive traditional Chinese patterns. He spent five years collecting traditional patterns from villages across Southwest China.

In 2018, he set up an online database of Chinese patterns. In the beginning, it had about 3,000 patterns. Now, there are more than 30,000 designs with over 300 themes. The goal is to make it easier for designers to use traditional Chinese patterns into their work.

In 2020, Huang started the International Pattern Design Competition (WZD) to encourage the practical use of traditional patterns in modern design. He hopes to have more products with Chinese patterns in the market. That will make traditional designs be seen by more people. The theme for this year’s WZD is “China. Pattern”. “Now that we live a better life, we don’t like everything being the same anymore. This gives a chance for new patterns to be created,” Huang said. He wants to make old-fashioned patterns cool and liked by everyone around the world. “Patterns can be understood by people from different places. I think our traditional designs will become more popular abroad in the future,” he said.
