保护海洋,刻不容缓
保护海洋,刻不容缓

We call Earth the “Blue Planet” because the ocean covers about 71 percent of it! The world has five oceans: the Antarctic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the Arctic Ocean, the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. The Pacific is the biggest — it’s bigger than all the land in the world put together. The Atlantic is smaller than the Pacific, but bigger than the Indian. The Antarctic is a little bigger than the Arctic Ocean, which is the smallest and frozen for a lot of the year. But scientists think that soon much of the ice will disappear because of climate change.

____▲____ Without oceans, humans, animals and plants couldn’t live. Oceans contain about 97 percent of all the water on Earth. Thanks to the water cycle, oceans give us rainwater and drinking water. At least half the oxygen we breathe comes from plants in the ocean. A lot of the food we eat comes from the ocean, and much of our energy comes from the ocean — both oil and gas are found under the sea. Today we can make electricity from waves and tides without pollution. Most of the goods that we use are transported on ships by sea, and boats are a way for people to travel. The coast is also a place for people to live and to have fun. Many people like to spend their free time and holidays at the beach!

However, oceans are being polluted. There are billions and billions of pieces of plastic in our oceans. There are five huge patches (块) of plastic in the oceans around the world. One patch in particular, known as the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch”, measures 1.6 million square kilometres — that’s about seven times the size of the UK! Plastic in oceans is killing fish, birds, turtles and other sea creatures. It’s also dangerous for our health, because fish eat the tiny pieces of plastic and then humans eat the fish.

There’s lots that we can do, on World Oceans Day and on every day of the year!

1.1.What’s the right order of the five oceans in size?

A The Pacific > The Indian > The Arctic > The Antarctic > The Atlantic

B The Pacific > The Atlantic > The Arctic > The Antarctic > The Indian

C The Pacific > The Atlantic > The Antarctic > The Indian > The Arctic

D The Pacific > The Atlantic > The Indian >The Antarctic > The Arctic

解析:选D。细节理解题。根据第一段的“The Pacific is the biggest”太平洋面积是最大的;以及“The Atlantic is smaller than the Pacific, but bigger than the Indian. The Antarctic is a little bigger than the Arctic Ocean, which is the smallest and frozen for a lot of the year.”大西洋比太平洋小,但比印度洋大。南冰洋比北冰洋大一点,北冰洋是最小的。由此可知,五大洋按从大到小的顺序依次为:太平洋,大西洋,印度洋,南冰洋,北冰洋。故选D。

2.2.Which sentence can be put in the “ ____▲____” in Para. 2?

3.3.Why is the UK mentioned in this text?

A To explain how plastics end up in the ocean.

B To warn people against the pollution in the UK.

One patch in particular, known as the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch”, measures 1.6 million square kilometres — that’s about seven times the size of the UK!”

4.4. Which column of a news website may the text be taken from?

A Environment.

B Education.

C Technology.
