玉兔:舍身获仙职,违令赴广寒
玉兔:舍身获仙职,违令赴广寒

A long time ago in China, the Jade Emperor went to Earth. He pretended to be a tired old man who needed food. In a forest, he met a fox, a rabbit, and a monkey. He asked them for food. The monkey and the fox quickly brought him food. The rabbit couldn’t find any food and felt bad. He jumped into the fire to offer himself as food. The Jade Emperor was moved. He gave the rabbit the job of making special pills that let gods live forever.

The rabbit tried very hard to learn how to make special pills. He quickly became good at this job, which made the Jade Emperor very happy. So he made the rabbit’s fur white and shiny like snow. The rabbit’s fur was as white as jade, and so he was called the Jade Rabbit.

One day, the Queen Mother of the West came to ask the Jade Rabbit for more special pills. The Jade Rabbit told her that each god could only have one pill every thousand years and that the Jade Emperor had said no more pills could be given. The Queen Mother was not happy and still wanted another pill. The Jade Rabbit gave her the pill because he was afraid of her.

Later, the Jade Emperor found out about this and asked the Jade Rabbit himself to decide what his punishment (惩罚) should be. The Jade Rabbit told the Emperor that he would go and live in the Moon Palace with Chang’e and be lonely forever.
