One day that seemed quite ordinary, the people of Kaifeng awoke to discover that there were plenty of shared bicycles in their city. What happened? Where did these shared bicycles come from?
It is said that everything began on June 18th. At that time, a group of four girls wanted to taste Kaifeng’s famous soup dumplings. “After class, we felt like trying some soup dumplings, and that’s when we made up our minds to take on the challenge of riding shared bikes to Kaifeng. You’re only young once. So we really wanted to start a sudden, exciting journey with our closest friends,” said the young girls involved.
This activity is attracting lots of university students in Zhengzhou. Groups of Zhengzhou students are starting riding to Kaifeng, cycling 50 kilometers during the early morning hours. The 50-kilometer trip took about five hours to complete. On their way, some bikers are holding flags, while others are singing together. When they come across slopes (斜坡), they encourage one another to keep going.
The cycling event has gotten a lot of attention. The traffic police are checking the roads at night to make sure everyone is safe. Also, relevant authorities (相关部门) set up shared bike interchange points along the routes. What’s more, from November 3, Kaifeng’s scenic spots are letting students in for free to welcome the wave! For example, the Millennium City Park is giving free one-year membership (会员资格) cards to university students from other places who come to Kaifeng by bicycle.
