    Hanfu is the traditional clothing system of Han people. Its history dates back to 4,000 years ago. 

    Around the Qin Dynasty, Hanfu was well established. At that time, designs of Hanfu followed these key rules: It should have a top and bottom; the bottom can be pants or a full-length skirt; the top and bottom meet around the waist. These rules were also important during the Han Dynasty.

    During the Wei and Jin dynasties, it started to focus more on a finished look with a division of the upper and lower body from the waist, especially by using a belt. 

    By the Sui and Tang dynasties, the three rules were still there, but some new ones were added. For instance, a long gown (女长服) became a new standard.

    The Song Dynasty innovated according to these rules. And different styles were born.

    During the Ming Dynasty (14th to 16th centuries), people liked to mix and match different styles. A short top with a Ma-mian skirt is typical. A long top can also go with a skirt. It’s all very open and easy-going. However, a major change is on the collar (衣领).

    Hanfu gradually went out of fashion during the Qing Dynasty, and it was largely replaced in the early 20th century.
