    On the night of the Chinese Lantern Festival, streets are decorated with colorful lanterns, often with riddles written on them. People eat sweet rice balls called tangyuan, watch dragon and lion dances, and set off fireworks. Chinese Lantern Festival can be traced back to 2,000 years ago.

    There are many stories about how the festival started. One story goes that the Jade Emperor’s favorite bird was killed by some people in a village. He got angry and wanted to burn the village on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. The Jade Emperor’s daughter felt very sad about this. So she told the people in the village about her father’s plan. The villagers didn’t know what to do. Then a wise man had a good idea. He advised them to put up red lanterns to make it look like the village was already on fire. The Jade Emperor was fooled and didn’t burn the village. Since then, people have been putting up red lanterns every year on that day.
