As the Spring Festival arrives, it’s common to feel more homesick than usual, especially if you’re studying in other parts of the world. If you’re staying alone for the Spring Festival and feeling down about it, here are some tips to help you avoid holiday sadness and stress.

____▲____

No matter what you do on the Spring Festival, make sure to have a video chat session with your family — perhaps during the New Year’s Eve dinner. Set up your webcam (网络摄像机) on your kitchen table and enjoy your meal while sharing jokes and smiles with your family ... It won’t be the same as being there in person, but it’s still great.

Mail gifts to your family

This obviously requires a tiny bit of planning in advance, but it could well be worth the effort (only if you can afford the shipping costs though). Send your family New Year gifts by air-mail or online shopping to let them know that you’re thinking of them this year even though you can’t be physically there ... Make sure you do this early enough though!

Crash a friend’s family home

It’s perfectly natural to feel embarrassed at the prospect of spending the Spring Festival with someone else’s family, especially if you’re a shy person. You might think you’d rather be alone than join in, but don’t forget that your friend wouldn’t have invited you if they didn’t want you there. It’s also a great chance to share your own holiday traditions with your hosts.

Link up with friends in the same situation

You’re probably not the only Chinese student spending the Spring Festival alone. You can organize a small get-together with those people you know. Ask around, create a Facebook event, and be spontaneous. And while you may not know these people very well right now, you probably will by the time you eat Chinese dumplings together.

1.1. Which of the following can be put back into the blank “____▲____”?

A Write a letter to your family.

B Make a video call with your family.

C Send a telegram to your family.

D Post a message on social media.

根据该段的“make sure to have a video chat session with your family”“Set up your webcam”可知,无论你决定在春节做什么,都要计划与家人进行视频聊天。

2.2. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage about mailing gifts to family?

A It requires a lot of planning.

B It is a very expensive activity.

C It requires early preparation.

D It is for those with high incomes.

根据文章中的“Mail gifts to your family”部分“Make sure you do this early enough though!” 选项A(它需要大量的计划)与原文中的“a tiny bit of planning”不符;选项B(它是一项非常昂贵的活动)与原文中的“only if you can afford the shipping costs though”不完全对应,原文只是说有运费成本,并未说礼物非常昂贵;选项D(它适用于那些高收入者)并未提及。故选C。

3.3. What is the author’s opinion about spending the Spring Festival with a friend’s family?

A It’s a sign of being grateful.

B It’s embarrassing to the host.

C It’s the last thing for anyone to do.

D It’s suitable for sharing cultures.

根据第四段内容,尤其是“It’s also a great chance to share your own holiday traditions with your hosts.”

4.4. For whom does the author most probably write?

A Chinese overseas students.

B Foreign students in China.

C Chinese university students.

D Chinese Culture lovers.

解析:选A。 根据第一段的“especially if you’re studying in other parts of the world”以及最后一段的“You’re probably not the only Chinese student spending the Spring Festival alone.” 故选A。
