迟来多年的畅销奇迹
迟来多年的畅销奇迹

Most writers wish their books could become bestsellers, but Elissa Guralnick never imagined hers would take forty years to shine. Back in 1985, she worked with Paul Levitt to create Weighty Words, a kids’ vocabulary book full of funny stories and word tricks to teach hard words. Sadly, it never won wide popularity over the years and hardly brought them any income. Guralnick once joked that they never made a single dollar from this book.

No one expected a short TikTok video to completely change its fate. Writer Eli McCann posted a video talking about his deep love for the book when he was an eighth grader. His warm words touched plenty of viewers and spread wildly online. Readers were drawn to its creative way of learning vocabulary. For example, it uses a firefly named Gloriana to explain “scintillate (闪闪发光)”. The little firefly glows all night, and other fireflies make a fun joke to help kids keep the word in mind.

Soon after the video went viral, Weighty Words shot straight to the top of Amazon’s bestseller list overnight. The unexpected sharp rise in orders surprised the publisher, and they immediately arranged new printing to satisfy thousands of eager buyers.

Though the amazing sales excited Guralnick and Levitt, money was never their main joy. What warms their hearts most is the happiness shared by their whole families. All of their children are delighted (高兴的) by the book’s second chance at success. Levitt even says such unbelievable sales make him believe in magic, and watching his kids cheer for this little old book is the most precious reward of the whole story.

1.1.What can we learn about Weighty Words?

A It teaches kids difficult words.

B It sold well right after 1985.

C It made its writers much money.

D It was written by a single writer.

解析:选A。A 细节理解题。根据第一段中“a kids’ vocabulary book full of funny stories and word tricks to teach hard words”可知,《Weighty Words》是一本教孩子难词的词汇书,因此A项正确。B项与原文“it never won wide popularity over the years”相悖,说明它并未在1985年后马上畅销;C项错误,因为文中明确提到“hardly brought them any income”以及作者开玩笑说没赚到一分钱;D项错误,书是由Elissa Guralnick与Paul Levitt两人合著,并非单独一位作者。故选A。

2.2.Who posted the video about loving this vocabulary book?

A Gloriana.

B Paul Levitt.

C Eli McCann.

D Guralnick’s child.

解析:选C。C 细节理解题。第二段直接指出“Writer Eli McCann posted a video talking about his deep love for the book”,发布视频表达对这本书喜爱的人是Eli McCann,故选C。A项Gloriana是书中用于解释单词的萤火虫角色,并非现实中的人;B项Paul Levitt是作者之一;D项Guralnick的孩子在文中虽被提及为书的成功感到高兴,但并未发布该视频,因此均可排除。故选C。

3.3. What does the underlined phrase “went viral” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A Got lost on the Internet.

B Got widely shared online.

C Cost lots of money.

D Disappeared quickly.

解析:选B。B 词义猜测题。前文描述视频“spread wildly online”,在网络上疯狂传播,紧接着“Soon after the video went viral”后,书就冲上畅销榜,由此可推知“went viral”意为“在网络上被广泛分享、迅速走红”,与B项意思一致。A项“在网络中丢失”和D项“迅速消失”都与疯狂传播并引发热销的结果相反;C项“花费大量金钱”则完全不符合语境。故选B。

4.4. What do the authors value most?

A The high sales figures.

B The recognition from other writers.

C The happiness of family members.

D The chance to write more books.

解析:选C。C细节理解题。最后一段明确写道“money was never their main joy. What warms their hearts most is the happiness shared by their whole families”,说明作者最看重的并非金钱,而是家人共同分享的快乐,且后文通过孩子们的高兴和Levitt的话进一步印证,C项正确。A项高销量虽让他们兴奋,但不是最主要的喜悦;B项“其他作家的认可”文中未提及;D项“写更多书的机会”也不是作者所强调的。故选C。

5.5. What is the best title for this passage?

A A Magic Video That Changed Everything.

B How to Write a Children’s Book.

C The Importance of Learning New Vocabulary.

D A Forty-Year-Old Book Finally Finds Its Readers.

解析:选D。D主旨大意题。文章从头到尾讲述的是一本1985年出版的书,长期无人问津,在将近四十年后因一个视频意外走红,终于被广大读者发现和喜爱的故事,核心在于“旧书终遇读者”,因此D项最贴合全文主旨。A项虽然提到视频的重要作用,但重点落在“改变一切”,缺少“四十年”与“书”的核心要素;B项局限于写童书的方法,完全偏离内容;C项突出学词汇的重要性,也远非文章主题。故选D。
