Since 2025, multiple regions including Hubei, Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangdong have gradually included brain-computer interface (BCI) related medical services into medical insurance coverage. Hospitals such as Xuanwu Hospital and Beijing Tiantan Hospital have opened BCI outpatient clinics, drawing a surge in consultations. However, most patients are told they are “temporarily not suitable” after evaluation; data from Beijing Tiantan Hospital shows that only about 10 percent meet the inclusion criteria for clinical research.

The inclusion of BCI in medical insurance currently refers to the establishment of medical service pricing items, as implantable devices have yet to receive market approval. Patients mainly receive treatment through scientific research programs. Doctors stress that existing achievements still rely on strict patient screening, individualized protocols, and long-term rehabilitation training, and a true “cyber age” remains a distant prospect.
