Chongqing always gets extremely hot in summer. Its temperature often rises above 40 degree centigrade. This summer’s hot and dry period lasts from July 7 to August 31. The average temperature is expected to be 1 degree centigrade higher than normal.
To help local people stay away from the terrible heat, the city opened 44 underground civil air defense shelters (人防掩蔽所) as free cooling centers on July 5. These centers lie in 11 different districts of Chongqing and offer people a cool place to rest without paying any money.
All the cooling centers cover over 11,000 square meters in total. They open every day from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Inside each center, there are desks, chairs and clean drinking water. Workers also prepare special medicine to prevent summer ailments. Some workers stay on duty all day long. They look after visitors’ safety and give people help when they need it.
These underground spaces were built into hillsides (山坡). The government started to change them into public cooling areas in 2002. This public welfare project works well. Official numbers show that more than 26.3 million people have visited these cool shelters so far.

1.1.How long will the extreme weather last in Chongqing?

A One week.

B About two months.

C Three months.

D Four weeks.

根据第一段“This summer’s hot and dry period lasts from July 7 to August 31”可知,这段时期约56天,接近两个月。

2.2.Why are these cooling centers open to people for free?

A To test the shelters.

B To make the city famous.

C To help people keep cool.

D To sell medicine.

根据第二段“To help local people stay away from the terrible heat, the city opened... free cooling centers”可知,开放中心的目的就是帮市民避暑纳凉。

3.3.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?

A What the cooling centers provide.

B How to build a cooling shelter.

C Where the cooling centers are.

D When the shelters first opened.

解析:选A。 故选A。

4.4.The word “ailments” in paragraph 3 probably means ______.

A 情绪

5.5.What can we infer about the cooling project?

A It began over 20 years ago.

B Few people go to cool shelters.

C It was first built for summer rest.

D It stops working these days.

解析:选A。 根据第四段“The government started to change them into public cooling areas in 2002”,结合当前年份(2026),可知该项目已启动二十余年。B“很少有人前往”与 “26.3 million people have visited” 矛盾;C“最初用来避暑”与原文 air defense shelters 矛盾(最初是防空用途);D”现已停运“与 works well 矛盾。故选A。
