A ten-year-old girl named Scarlet helped save a whale near K’gari Island, Australia. While Scarlet was travelling with her mother, Chantelle Smith, they found the huge whale stranded near Wathumba Creek entrance.
Chantelle has been visiting this area to watch whales for twenty years. When they saw the helpless whale, they quickly stopped beside it. Scarlet kept splashing water onto the whale’s body to stop it from drying out. They learnt someone had already called wildlife officers, so they knew help was on the way. Later, they had to leave, but another couple stayed to look after the whale. Soon the tide rose, and the whale swam back into the sea by itself.
Chantelle felt worried for a long time. She feared the whale might die, as many whales lose their lives because of stranding. She was greatly relieved when she heard the whale survived. The wide-open mouth of the whale and its hair-like baleens(鲸须) left a deep impression on her.
Whales may get stranded for different reasons. A single whale often strands when it is old, sick, hurt or loses its way. Some whales live in close groups. If their leader makes a wrong choice or one whale gets injured, the whole group may swim onto the shore(岸).
If you see stranded marine animals, do not get close. You should ask adults to call the wildlife hotline right away and offer clear information such as location and photos. Proper actions can give sea animals a better chance to survive.

1.1. What did Scarlet do to help the whale?
A Called the wildlife hotline.
B Pulled it back to sea.
C Kept the whale wet.
D Waited with another couple.
根据第二段“Scarlet kept splashing water onto the whale’s body to stop it from drying out”可知,Scarlet不断向鲸鱼身上泼水,防止其身体变干,即让鲸鱼保持湿润。故选C。
2.2. The underlined word “they” refers to ____.
A wildlife officers
B scarlet’s family
C another couple
D whale watchers
第二段“Later, they had to leave, but another couple stayed to look after the whale”中,they与another couple通过but构成对比——they只能离开,另一对夫妇留下照看。结合前文,正在救助鲸鱼的是Scarlet和母亲Chantelle(“Scarlet kept splashing water onto the whale’s body”),因此they指代Scarlet母女,即Scarlet’s family。故选B。
3.3. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A Chantelle knew a lot about whale stranding.
B Scarlet had seen stranded whales before this.
C The whale belonged to a large group.
D Wildlife officers arrived before the tide rose.
解析:选A。 根据第二段“Chantelle has been visiting this area to watch whales for twenty years”和第三段“She feared the whale might die, as many whales lose their lives because of stranding”综合推断:Chantelle连续二十年到该海域观鲸,了解搁浅对鲸鱼的致命威胁,且知道泼水保湿这一救助方法,说明她对鲸鱼搁浅具备较多认知。该结论需连接P2(二十年经验)与P3(搁浅知识)两处信息方能得出,非单一细节的转述。故选A。
4.4.The writer wrote the last paragraph to ____.
A share a story about saving whales
B explain why whales may get stranded
C advise readers on what to do
D introduce readers to the wildlife hotline
根据第五段“If you see stranded marine animals, do not get close. You should ask adults to call the wildlife hotline right away and offer clear information such as location and photos”可知,末段以祈使句(do not get close)和should句型(You should ask…)
5.5.What is the main idea of the passage?
A Ways to help protect sea animals.
B Some common dangers whales often face.
C People’s great love for sea creatures.
D A whale rescue story and facts.
