Nearly 10,000 young people from China, Bulgaria, Georgia, South Korea and South Africa came to Zhengzhou, Henan province, last weekend. They joined the finals of the Invention Convention China (ICC), a big competition for young inventors. More than 70,000 students took part in the event this year.
Their works were about a greener life, future travel, smart machines and protecting wildlife. Some works try to make life easier for old people. A three-judge panel will review each work from different ways, and the results will come out next week.
Among the competitors was Liu Kaiyuan, an 11-year-old boy from Shanghai. He made a “light-chasing simulator” for space stations. It shows how light moves inside a real space station. “Making it taught me how light works and how careful engineers must be,” Liu said.
Chen Ailin watched her two children present their works. The children designed a smart cup that keeps drinking water safe and an alarm that tells people the water temperature. Chen said the ideas came from their visits to a nursing home.
Officials said the event gives young people a stage to follow their scientific dreams. A judge said children’s minds are less limited than adults’, so science has no age limits. Another official said science has no borders. Children from different countries can share ideas and make friends through the event.
