In 2017, Tan Meizhen visited her alma mater (母校), Caoyuan School in Longhui County, Hunan Province. What she learned worried her. Fewer and fewer children were studying there, and the school lacked teachers. It was being pushed toward closure. If the school closed, the village children would have to attend schools much farther away.
At the time, Tan taught at a primary school in town, which was a more comfortable job. But she decided to return to Caoyuan School. When she arrived, she found she was the only teacher left, and the old classrooms were in poor condition. She rented a villager’s house as a classroom and painted a door black to use as a blackboard. She refused to give up.
Her hard work paid off. In 2018, three graduates from Hunan University volunteered to teach at the school, and more student volunteers came in the following years. With support from the local government, the school built a new teaching building with four bright classrooms.
As more teachers joined and the facilities improved, the students’ academic (学业的) performance steadily improved. Today, Caoyuan School attracts children from the surrounding villages, and more than 300 students and teachers study and work there. The village school, once in danger of closing, has come back to life.
Tan’s story shows that one person’s brave choice, together with many helping hands, can change the future of a whole community.
