Many grandparents are joining social media to keep in touch with their grandchildren. In the UK, more and more people over 55 are using Facebook. Soon, they will become the second-largest group on the site, with 3.5 million users aged 55 to 64 and 2.9 million users over 65.

Sheila, 59, joined Facebook to see what her grandchildren were doing. “My daughter posts photos and videos of them. It’s a much better way than waiting for letters. That’s how we did it when I was a child,” she says. “I’m lucky I can see much more of their lives than my grandparents did.”

However, Sheila’s grandchildren don’t use Facebook much. Many British children under 17 are leaving the site, but they are still enthusiastic about their smartphones. Chloe, 15, even sleeps with her phone. “It’s my alarm clock,” she says. “I look at it before I sleep and as soon as I wake up.”

Unlike Sheila, Chloe’s age group spends so much time on phones that they miss out on seeing friends in real life. Sheila, however, has found old school friends she hadn’t heard from for forty years. “We use Facebook to arrange meetings around the country,” she says. “It has completely changed my social life.”

Teenagers may have their parents to thank for this habit, as parents were the first to use smartphones. Peter, 38, father of two teenagers, used to be on his phone or computer all the time. “I always felt I was working,” he says. “How could I tell my kids to get off their phones if I was always in front of a screen?” In the evenings and at weekends, he replaces his smartphone with an old-style phone that can only call and text. “I am not completely cut off, but I am setting a better example and spending more quality time with my kids.”

1.1.Who is joining Facebook in growing numbers?

A Young people under seventeen.

B Teenagers who love their phones.

C People over fifty-five years old.

D People who love online games.

根据第一段“In the UK, more and more people over 55 are using Facebook.” C“People over fifty-five years old”一致。

2.2. Why did Sheila join Facebook?

A To make new friends online.

B To know her grandchildren.

C To finish her work quickly.

D To buy some cheap things.

根据第二段首句“Sheila, 59, joined Facebook to see what her grandchildren were doing.” B项“To know her grandchildren.”

3.3. The underlined phrase “enthusiastic about” probably means _________ .

A worried about

B angry with

C crazy about

D surprised at

根据“Many British children under 17 are leaving the site, but they are still enthusiastic about their smartphones. Chloe, 15, even sleeps with her phone.” A项“worried about”、B项“angry with”、D项“surprised at”都不符合语境。故选C。

4.4. What does Peter’s story suggest?

A Parents’ habits influence their children.

B Teenagers should not use any phones.

C Old-style phones are becoming popular.

D Children should thank parents more.

解析:选A。 最后一段提到“Teenagers may have their parents to thank for this habit”,这个短语意为“这个习惯的形成要归功于父母”,因为父母是最早使用智能手机的群体。 故选A。

5.5. What is the passage mainly about?

A The best way to use social media.

B The danger of spending time online.

C Teenagers must give up smartphones soon.

D Different generations use technology differently.
