A young man from the UK speaks the local dialect (方言) of Nantong very well. People in the city call him a local. His name is Callum. Callum came to China in 2018 and moved to Nantong in 2020. He teaches English to young children there.
Callum met a girl from Nantong, and they fell in love. To talk with her family and friends, he began to learn the local language. He was never afraid of making mistakes. When he could not understand people, he asked again and again. The people around him became his teachers.
Now Callum can talk with people in the dialect every day. One October morning, he asked a seller how much the vegetables were. The seller was surprised and laughed, “You are a foreigner, but you speak it better than my child.”
