University libraries in China are no longer places that only keep old books. They are transforming. They are becoming living spaces where young people can see, touch and take part in their culture.
Tsinghua University Library shows how. Its famous “Glass Stacks” still look the same as they did 100 years ago. They have tall metal shelves, a glass floor, and books with notes written by students long ago. The writer Qian Zhongshu once said he would read every book in the library. “Students today come here for more than books,” says Yin Xin, who works at the library. “When they see these books, they get an experience that a classroom lesson cannot give.”
Other libraries bring the past closer to students. At Beijing Normal University, the library began collecting school books in the 1930s. Today it has more than 80,000 of them, and a show lets students see what earlier generations learned. “School books shape the person you grow into,” says Hu Shenqiu, who also works at the library.
Students can also take part. At Minzu University of China, the library holds a reading event every month. Each time it offers 20 places, and they are usually taken within five minutes. Students from different parts of China sit around one table and talk about the book together. Jirikeniu, a student there, says he gets much more from these talks than from large classes. In the age of AI, that experience matters even more.
AI can now answer questions in seconds. But it cannot let students stand in front of shelves of books that are 100 years old. And it cannot bring classmates together around one table to talk about a book. So the library keeps changing. One thing does not: it still gives young people something to see, to touch and to share.
1.1.What does the underlined word “transforming” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A moving to a bigger place
B buying more new books
C changing in important ways
D taking in more students
解析:选C。C 词义猜测题。前文说“University libraries in China are no longer places that only keep old books.”,后文又提到“They are becoming living spaces where young people can see, touch and take part in their culture.”,说明高校图书馆不再仅仅是藏书之地,而是转变为文化体验空间,体现图书馆正发生重大变化,所以transforming意为在重要方面改变,对应C选项。A、B、D原文无信息支撑。故选C。
2.2.Why do students come to the “Glass Stacks” today?
A To borrow books for class.
B To meet the famous writer.
C To study in a quiet room.
D To feel the past for themselves.
解析:选D。D 推理判断题。第二段引图书馆员尹昕的话“Students today come here for more than books”,紧接着又说“When they see these books, they get an experience that a classroom lesson cannot give”,两处合起来才能推出:他们来是为了亲身感受过去。A项只覆盖了“books”这一层,不能体现“more than books”所强调的文化体验;B“To meet the famous writer”把钱钟书(文中只说他曾表示要读遍馆内每一本书)当成今天还在的人,或误以为学生是来见这位作家;C“To study in a quiet room”文中无依据。故选D。
3.3.Why does the writer quote Hu Shenqiu’s words?
A To show why school books are important.
B To tell how the collection started.
C To explain why the show is popular.
D To prove that the books are old.
解析:选A。A 推理判断题。第三段先写这个图书馆从1930年代开始收藏教材、如今馆藏教材达8万余册,再用一个展览让学生看到前几代人学过什么;胡沈秋的话“School books shape the person you grow into”正是对这些陈列的说明——教材塑造了一代代人,所以值得保存与展示。B“To tell how the collection started”讲的是段中叙述部分(1930年代),不是引语的作用;C“To explain why the show is popular”文中从未说这个展览受欢迎(“名额五分钟抢完”是第四段民大读书会的事);
4.4.What does Jirikeniu think of the reading events?
A They cost him a lot of money.
B They are better than big classes.
C They last for five minutes.
D They are hard to follow.
解析:选B。B 观点态度题。第四段引学生Jirikeniu说“he gets much more from these talks than from large classes”,B“They are better than big classes”与之一致。A“They cost him a lot of money”文中无依据;C“They last for five minutes”把“名额五分钟被抢完”误读成了活动时长;D“They are hard to follow”与他“收获更多”的评价相反。故选B。
