My friend Doug has really done well for himself in life. I’m very proud of him and all of his achievements! We get together every year or so for a two- or three-day hike. It’s a great time to reflect on life, talk about old times and have new adventures.

Let me tell you a little bit about Doug. It was clear from the beginning that Doug would have a bright future. He did very well in school; everyone knew he was bright. Not only were his grades good, but he was also an outstanding athlete and behaved well. Some said he was too good to be true, and Doug would laugh. He wouldn’t let anyone stop him from going forward!

After college, Doug moved to New York. As the song goes, “If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere!” Back then, New York was full of new ideas and chances. Doug was a product design specialist with good ideas ready to go. Unfortunately, he didn’t succeed right away. Life in the big city was tough at first, so he decided to show his director what he could really do. He volunteered to create a new product presentation for the company’s big annual meeting. The director had doubts, but the presenter had not yet been chosen. In the end, the director trusted Doug with the task. Doug gladly accepted the challenge to make a strong impression. He did not start from nothing, and he knew he could improve on past presentations.

On presentation day, Doug did an outstanding job. His talk was informative, and he was very down-to-earth. He pointed out existing problems and offered practical improvement suggestions. Because of his presentation, the director realized that he was the genuine article — a young man who said what he could do and then actually did it. Doug started taking more and more responsibility at the company. Within three years, he had successfully developed two of his best ideas.

1.1. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this text?

A To explain how to succeed in a big city.

B To share the story of a friend he admires.

C To advise young people to work in New York.

D To compare city life with life in a small town.

原文第一段明确说“I’m very proud of him and all of his achievements”以及 “Let me tell you a little bit about Doug”,后文围绕朋友道格从优秀学生到在纽约努力取得成功的故事展开,因此作者写作的主要目的是分享自己钦佩的朋友的故事,B项正确。

2.2. Which of the following best describes Doug in Paragraph 2?

A Talented but modest.

B Proud but hard-working.

C Gifted but anxious.

D Popular but careless.

解析:选A。 Some said he was too good to be true, and Doug would laugh——别人把他夸到“好得令人难以置信”,他只一笑了之。 故选A。

3.3. Why did Doug volunteer to prepare the presentation?

A To get a higher salary.

B To improve on past presentations.

C To take more responsibility.

D To show his ability to his director.

原文第三段明确提到“he decided to show his director what he could really do. He volunteered to create a new product presentation...”,即道格自愿准备展示是为了向主管展示自己真正的能力,因此D项“To show his ability to his director”正确。

4.4. What does the underlined part “he was the genuine article” in Paragraph 4 mean?

A He was a good salesman.

B He was a good storyteller.

C He was capable and reliable.

D He was good at pleasing others.

原文第四段用破折号解释了“he was the genuine article — a young man who said what he could do and then actually did it”,意思是他说到做到、确实有能力并值得信任,因此C项“He was capable and reliable”正确。
