Mürren
This car-free village looks straight at the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Visitors can ride the world’s steepest cable-car from Stechelberg, hike the North Face Trail, or take another cable-car to the Schilthorn, where a revolving restaurant turns past 200 peaks.
Guarda
Painted houses, stone lanes and fountains fill this village of 160 people in the Lower Engadine. Romansh is still spoken here, and a local restaurant serves soup, meat and a sweet nut cake.
Bettmeralp
Reached by cable-car, this car-free village sits on a plateau above the Rhône Valley. In summer, hikers walk beside the 14-mile Aletsch Glacier; in winter, locals move about by sledge and ski.
Morcote
Narrow lanes drop to Lake Lugano past cypress trees and vines. Visit the gardens of Parco Scherrer, then taste local red wine at a family-run estate.
Gruyères
