Iceland is a cold island country far from other countries. It has only a little farmland. However, it uses its natural resources—heat from the earth, clean water and green electricity—to change food production. These resources help people grow food in new ways. Because of the cold weather, the country cannot grow many common crops outdoors.

Farmers and inventors are building indoor and underground farms. These farms can grow crops that are hard to grow in Iceland’s cold climate. For example, a former IT worker started an underground farm. He grows sweet Japanese strawberries there and sells them to local people.

Other new companies repurpose waste heat from data centers Instead of letting this heat go to waste, they find new uses for it.They send the heat into old shipping containers (集装箱). Inside, they grow small green vegetables and other fresh food. The heat keeps the plants warm. This clever idea helps Iceland rely less on food from other countries.

New water farms also grow a lot of tiny water plants in large tanks. These plants produce natural materials for health products. This shows that Iceland’s special environment is useful for green farming ideas. In this way, the island makes good use of what it has.

1.1. What helps Iceland change food production?

A Food from abroad.

B Resources from nature.

C Cold winter weather.

D Little farmland.

原文第一段明确提到“it uses its natural resources — heat from the earth, clean water and green electricity—to change food production”,即冰岛利用自然资源来改变食品生产,因此B项“Resources from nature”正确。

2.2. What can we know from Paragraph 2?

A Many farms are underground.

B IT workers like growing crops.

C Iceland is short of food.

D Some crops need indoor farms.

第二段说“These farms can grow crops that are hard to grow in Iceland’s cold climate.”,可见建这些室内、地下农场,正是为了种那些在冰岛寒冷气候下很难种成的作物;反过来说,就是有些作物在户外长不好,得依靠室内农场——这正是选项D“Some crops need indoor farms.” A项“很多农场在地下”,把原文“Farmers and inventors are building indoor and underground farms.”(有人正在建)说成了“已经有很多”,在数量上夸大了。B项把原文的“a former IT worker”(一位转行的IT工作者)扩大到“IT workers都喜欢种作物”,而原文举的只是一个例子。

3.3. What does the underlined word “repurpose” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A Reuse.

B Replace.

C Repair.

D Return.

解析:选A。 根据第三段的“Instead of letting this heat go to waste, they find new uses for it”以及把数据中心废热送入旧集装箱种菜可知,repurpose意为“重新利用”,与Reuse意思最接近,因此A项正确。 故选A。

4.4.What does the writer think of Iceland’s environment?

A It harms most crops.

B It stops farming.

C It suits special farming.

D It is hard to copy.

第四段“This shows that Iceland’s special environment is useful for green farming ideas.” A项“It harms most crops.”把“种不了”说成了“伤害”——原文只写“Because of the cold weather, the country cannot grow many common crops outdoors.”,讲的是户外种不了许多常见作物,既没说作物被伤害,也不是most;B项“It stops farming.”

5.5. What is the best title of the passage?

A Importing Food to Iceland.

B New Farming in Iceland.

C Data Centers in Cities.

D How to Grow Strawberries.
