Last month I drove to a wedding in Vermont. Halfway there, my phone died. No map on the screen, no voice to tell me which way to turn. Then I remembered the paper map my father had given me years before, folded in my bag.

My father loved maps. Every Sunday he spread one on the kitchen table and traced the roads with his finger. “You see this river? It runs all the way to the sea,” he would say. He drew our house on the back of an envelope and marked the way to the bakery with a star. He taught me to find north by the sun, and to read a map before starting, not after getting lost.

I did not always listen. For years I trusted my phone. It was faster, and it never asked me to think. Once it sent me down a farm road at night; I drove for an hour before I understood that the voice had been wrong. I laughed, then I did not.

That afternoon I opened my father’s map on the passenger seat. It was old and soft at the corners, and it smelled faintly of the drawer it had lived in. I found the river, then the road beside it, then the church where the wedding was. I put my thumb on the town where I stood, the way he used to do. I was late, but I was not lost.

My father died three years ago. The map is the only thing of his I still use every week; it lives in the kitchen, next to the keys. I have learned that a map does not tell you where you are going; it asks you to look. A phone gives me an answer. My father’s map gives me a way of seeing.

1.1. What did the author’s father teach her to do?

A Draw maps on envelopes.

B Find north by the stars.

C Read a map before setting off.

D Keep maps in the car.

第二段末写“He taught me to find north by the sun, and to read a map before starting, not after getting lost.”,父亲教她的是“出发前先看地图”。 (He drew our house on the back of an envelope),不是他教她的;B项把原文的by the sun偷偷换成了stars;D项文中没有,地图一直在她包里和厨房里。故选C。

2.2. How did the author feel after her phone sent her the wrong way?

A Angry with herself.

B Frightened by the dark.

C Sorry for her father.

D Amused at first.

第三段写“Once it sent me down a farm road at night... I laughed, and then I did not.”——先笑、后来笑不出来,说明她起初觉得好笑。

3.3. What did the author do when she found the town on the map?

A Followed her father’s habit.

B Called her father for help.

C Bought a new phone.

D Left the wedding early.

解析:选A。 第四段写“I put my thumb on the town. My father used to do that.”,说明她复刻了父亲以前常做的习惯动作。 故选A。

4.4. What does the author believe a map can do?

A Give you quick answers.

B Teach you to pay attention.

C Replace a phone.

D Save you from being late.

末段 “A map does not tell you where you are going. It asks you to look... gives me a way of seeing.”
