A Night on Italy’s New Sleeper Train
A new night train, La Dolce Vita, began running in Italy in 2025. It takes passengers on two- and three-night trips from Rome. Some trips reach Venice, Portofino and Matera, and one route crosses to Sicily by ferry.
The train cars are designed in the style of 1970s Italy, with orange ceilings, large mirrors and leather chairs. Every passenger has a private butler, who brings drinks and helps with bags. The biggest room has a full-size bed, while the other rooms have a sofa bed.
Dinner is served in a dining car, with a piano bar next to it. Musicians play while guests eat and talk, and in the evening the bar car becomes the most popular place on the train. Many guests take photos when the train stops at a station. On the two-night “Wine Route” trip, the train stops at Montalcino, where guests visit a family farm and taste Brunello, a famous local red wine. Guests choose their free-time activities when they book.
A three-night trip with flights and hotels starts at 3,975 pounds per person.
