Many people in Shenzhen can get help close to their homes. In 2015, the city began to build community service centres. Now it has more than 4,400.Each centre serves an area of about one kilometre, so people can walk there in about 15 minutes.
Children and students like the centres very much. Children can play chess with robots or play games with their friendsin a play area. Students can read books in a reading room. After school, they can also do their homework in the centre.
Older people have a good time there, too. They can have lunch in the canteen, get a haircut, or play table tennis. They also practise calligraphy— they write Chinese words with a brush and black ink.Some of them meet friends and talk for a long time there.
The centres are busy places. Every day, they receive over 400,000 visits. Many different people come: children, students, older people, and visitors from other countries. On 18 October, a man from New Zealand told people about his country at a centre in Shekou, and many children came to listen.
The centres are not big, but they do a lot for people. They make city life easy and warm. For many people, help is now just a short walk away.
